23 November 1999 - LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Actress
Salma Hayek and Hollywood's honorary
mayor Johnny Grant are planning to
entertain United States troops in
Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia and the
Yugoslav province of Kosovo over the
Thanksgiving holiday.
Bob Hope has asked Grant to continue
the USO tradition. The trips are nothing
new to Grant. This one marks his 52nd
journey to entertain Americans overseas.
"No one will ever fill Bob Hope's shoes," Grant said before boarding an
Army helicopter with Hayek at the Hollywood Bowl on Monday, "but I'm
honored to help perpetuate his illustrious USO career."
Hope, considered the dean of these military-entertainment trips, is 96.
Hayek, asked if she'll miss Thanksgiving with her family, said military
personnel aren't appreciated enough. She said she'd rather be part of their
holiday.
