Univision Interview on 'Frida' set

El mayor reto de Frida

El mayor reto fue fumar, no le atinaba a la boca. Frida fumaba con la mano izquierda y me costaba mucho trabajo encontrar la boca. Ahorita ya tengo controladísimo lo de la fumada. ¿Te costó más trabajo que pintar? Mucho más, pero es raro porque no me sale, o sea, he pintado fotos, pero dibujar no me sale tan bien, pero pintar sí, y me costó más trabajo fumar que pintar.

Salma y su bigote

Este bigote me costó mucho trabajo asi que no me lo hagas menos, porque me lo tuve que rasurar varias veces para que me empezara a salir. Frida no tenía tanto bigote como en las pinturas, ella se lo exageraba, tambien las cejas. Cuando era más joven tenía menos bigote, pero cuando se va haciendo mayor por alguna extraña razón le va saliendo más bigote.

Salma vs. la prensa mexicana

Entiendo lo que estan haciendo. Yo para ellos soy un negocio. Entonces ellos se levantan, inventan una cosa y la ponen en el periódico. Y luego el periodico lo venden a costa de levantar un falso y calumnias que mi familia tiene que leer. Porque yo no lo leo ¿eh?, y lo saben, saben que lo están haciendo. No es un malentendido. Ellos a propósito inventan las cosas, sabiendo que es para vender algo y sacrificandome a mi. Entonces me parece muy triste que en el único lugar en que soy tratada de esa manera sea en mi país. Sin embargo, yo sigo viniendo porque amo a México y amo a la gente y a pesar de que me tratan tan mal los periodistas, que me inventan cosas tan horribles, aquí vengo, traigo mis películas, genero trabajo para México, trato de hacer proyectos que den una buena imagen de México en el mundo... y lo hago con muchísimo cariño.

¿Y esto la perjudica?

Sinceramente, no, no mucho. Porque México representa el 1 por ciento, junto con muchos países de Latinoamérica, del box office internacional... y mis películas se ven en todo el mundo. Entonces realmente gracias a que mi trabajo es conocido en el mundo y que tengo el apoyo de los demás países del mundo no me afecta en mi carrera. Me afecta porque si me da tristeza que la gente de mi país esté malinformada con cosas que se levantan de la nada y que además si tan mal les caigo ¿porqué me acosan?"

The biggest challenge for Frida

The biggest challenge was to smoke. I couldn't hit upon my mouth. Frida smoked with her left hand and it was a lot of work for me to find my mouth. At this moment I have it all under control. Was it more difficult for you than painting? A lot more, but it's weird because I've painted pictures, but I can't draw that well, but I can paint. And it was more work to smoke than to paint.

Salma and her moustache

This moustache was a lot of work for me, so don't underappreciate it, because I had to shave it many times so that it would start to grow. Frida didn't have so much moustache as in her paintings. She used to exaggerate it, as well as the eyebrows. When she was younger she had less moustache, but when she became older, for some strange reason more moustache came out.

Salma vs. the Mexican press

I understand what they're doing. I'm a business for them. So they rise, invent something and put it in a newspaper. Then the newspaper is sold in spite of telling lies and calumnies that my family has to read. Because I don't read them, uh?, and they know that, they know what they're doing. It isn't a misunderstanding. They invent that stuff in purpose, knowing that it will sell and sacrificing me in the way. So I think it is really sad that the only place where I'm treated this way is in my own country. However, I keep coming because I love Mexico and I love Mexican people and even thou I'm treated this bad by reporters, which invent terrible things about me, here I come, bring my movies, generate work for Mexico, try to do projects which give out a good image of Mexico to the world.... and I do it with a lot of affection.

And does this affect you?

Sincerely, no, not much. because Mexico represents one per cent, along other Latinamerican countries, of the international box office... and my movies are seen in all the world. So because fortunately my work is known in all the world and because I have the support of all the other countries, it doesn't affect my career. It affects me because it's sad that people of my country are misinformed with stuff that is invented. And that, by the way.... if they don't like me, why is it that they pursue me?"
