Robert Rodiguez comments on his movie

Más que el dicho de “segundas partes nunca fueron buenas, y las terceras, menos”, Rodríguez pugna por aplicar aquel de “la tercera es la vencida”, pues afirma que “estoy filmando la historia que quería hacer desde la primera vez. Digamos que tardé tres intentos en hacer la correcta. Creo que ésta será la mejor porque es una producción más grande, el elenco es enorme y la historia es mejor”.
Many say that the first two Mariachi movies were no good and the third part will even be worse. Rodriguez comments:

In this movie, the Marichi returns contracted by a corrupt agent of the CIA (Jonnhy Depp) to participate in a coup d'etat against the president of Mexico, that was planned by a powerful drug dealer (Willem Dafoe). Nevertheless, all this only serves to create a conflict in the story and to make it more interesting, Rodriguez commented, because "the movie implies elements of reality, all my films are like dreams."

"They (the movies) imply real aspects, but the reality does not exist in my films. The central point of this tape is the search of freedom: people who need to find their personal freedom and must do unusual things to obtain it. In the end they will have it in their own way", the director added.
—Abordas el narcotráfico y un golpe de Estado, ¿se apega a la realidad de México?

Muchas de las historias y subtramas que uso, las tomo de la realidad para dar mayor conflicto a la trama, las buenas historias tienen mucho conflicto entre el bien y el mal, así que hay que poner personajes buenos y malos. Pero esta cinta no es un reflejo de México, es más bien una película del oeste; aunque tiene conflictos sacados de la realidad, la cinta es en principio una fantasía. Esta película no es real.
- Yes and no. Many of the stories and subplots that are used, are attached to reality to provide greater conflict to the plot. Good stories have much conflict between the good and the bad, so there have to be good and bad characters. But this tape is not a reflection of Mexico, it is rather a film of the west; although it has conflicts taken from reality, the tape is in principle a fantasy. This film is not real."
—El reparto es un dream team, ¿cómo conseguiste conjuntarlo?
- The cast is a dream. How were you able to get all the actors?
—Después de un éxito como el de Spy Kids —su más reciente película—, es más fácil encontrar actores que quieran trabajar con alguien que escribe y dirige sus propias películas; cuando esto sucede los actores se dan cuenta de que tienes ideas diferentes y que puede ser bueno trabajar contigo. Muchos de los actores que están en esta cinta han oído de mí por mucho tiempo. Además, algunos de ellos sufren mucho con otros directores y quieren hacer un trabajo que sea divertido y que tenga creatividad. Estas películas son muy divertidas y con mucha imaginación.
